    Surface Grinding Machines

    Surface grinding machines use horizontal spindles and reciprocating tables

    In the surface grinding process, the grinding wheel revolves on a spindle; and the work piece, mounted on either a reciprocating or a rotary table, is brought into contact with the grinding wheel. Though a surface grinding machine is the most preferred machines for finishing flat surfaces, some types of surface grinders are also capable of producing contour surface with formed grinding wheel.

    Types of Surface Grinders

    Based on the movement of the tables and the orientation of the grinding wheel, the surface grinding machines can be classified into four different types of surface grinding techniques:

    • Horizontal spindle and reciprocating table – With this type of surface grinder machine, the work moves back and forth under the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel is mounted on a horizontal spindle and cuts on its periphery as it contacts the work piece. It is the most widely used surface grinder and they are capable of accommodating very smaller to large work parts.
    • Vertical spindle and reciprocating table – The grinding operation is similar to that of face milling on a vertical milling machine. In this machine a cup shaped wheel grinds the work piece over its full width using end face of the wheel. When compared to the previous type of peripheral grinding, higher material removal rate can be achieved using this machine as it brings more grits into action. Bedways of an engine lathe and other long and narrow castings are most suited for grinding in this machine.
    • Horizontal spindle and rotary table – In this type of surface grinder, the work piece rotates 360 degrees on a rotary table underneath the wheelhead. The wheelhead moves across the work piece to provide the necessary cross feed movements. But there is an inherent limitation in the usage of this machine, it is not capable of grinding larger jobs. However, by swivelling the worktable, concave, convex or tapered surface grinding services can be produced on individual part.
    • Vertical spindle and rotary table – Vertical spindle machines use cup, cylinder, or segmented wheels. Many of these machines are equipped with two or more grinding heads to successively rough, semi-finish, and finish large castings, forgings, and welded fabrications in one rotation of the work table. The vertical surface grinding machine is mostly suitable for small work pieces in large quantities.
